Info about the grape variety
Grape variety: Mondeuse
Traditional (planted before 1900) | 5 HA in Switzerland (0,03%)
An old variety from Savoie (F), Mondeuse Noire takes its name from Maldoux, in reference to its high natural acidity. The DNA test revealed a parent-child link with Mondeuse Blanche, which places Mondeuse as the half-sister or grandmother of Syrah, and which explains why she is often referred to as Grosse Syrah. In Switzerland, Mondeuse Noire was widespread before the 19th century on the Lake Geneva region and in Valais under the name of Gros Rouge. This vigorous and disease-sensitive grape variety is finding renewed interest in it today and produces spicy wines with marked tannins.
