Traditional (planted before 1900) | 40 HA in Switzerland (0,28%)

Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains is a grape of Italian or Greek origin which is widely distributed in Mediterranean countries, in particular in Italy under the name of Moscato Bianco and in France under the name of Muscat de Frontignan. In Switzerland, this grape variety is already mentioned around 1535-1536 in Valais under the name of Muscatellum. Since 2008, we know thanks to morphological and genetic studies that there are two different Muscat in Valais: the Muscat du Pays, which is identical to the Italian Moscato Giallo, and the White Muscat, which is none other than the Muscat Blanc in Small Grains. The two Muscats cultivated in Valais therefore probably arrived via the Rhône valley for one and the Simplon pass for the other.
